The correct size of the cap is determined by the specific dimensions of the flue or the entire chimney crown if it covers multiple flues. Choosing a cap that is either too small or too large will compromise its effectiveness in keeping out water and animals. It is also useful to understand the difference between a standard chimney cap and a top-mounted damper, which seals the flue completely when the fireplace is not in use.
