Look for physical signs on the torso, such as prominent hip bones, a visible spine, or a sunken appearance to the belly. These indicators suggest muscle and fat loss beyond the tail reserves.
Using a digital scale to track weight in grams is the most objective way to monitor progress. Consistent weekly measurements help determine if the gecko is maintaining, losing, or gaining weight, which is far more reliable than visual inspection alone. A consistent downward trend or a weight significantly below 45 grams for a mature adult often warrants intervention. Staple Feeders
The first step in promoting healthy weight gain is to increase the quantity and frequency of staple feeders like Dubia roaches, crickets, and Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL). These insects offer a balanced nutritional profile, including a good protein-to-fat ratio, which supports healthy muscle and fat development. Dubia roaches are often preferred for their high protein content and moderate fat levels, making them an excellent foundation for a weight-gain diet.
High-Fat Feeders
Waxworms are high in fat and palatable, making them effective for stimulating appetite and providing a caloric boost. However, they must be used sparingly as an occasional treat, perhaps one or two per week, because over-reliance can lead to internal fat deposits and liver issues. Mealworms and Superworms also have higher fat and chitin content, so they should be rotated into the diet rather than serving as the sole food source.
