The simplest diagnostic tool for a scratch is the “fingernail test.” Gently run a fingernail across the scratch to determine its depth. If the nail catches in the groove, the scratch has likely gone through the clear coat into the color or primer layer, requiring a deep repair. If the nail glides smoothly, the damage is confined to the clear coat, making it a shallow scratch that can often be polished out.
Fixing Shallow Scratches
Scratches confined to the clear coat are corrected by leveling the surrounding finish using abrasive compounds. These products contain microscopic particles that gently remove a minute amount of the clear coat, smoothing the edges of the scratch until they are no longer visible. This abrasion restores a uniform surface reflection.
Before applying any product, the area must be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water to remove dirt or wax residue. Contaminants trapped in the scratch can cause further damage during polishing. This code ensures the touch-up paint matches the factory color formulation.
The repair area must be cleaned with a degreaser or isopropyl alcohol to ensure proper adhesion. Using a fine-tipped brush or touch-up pen, apply the base coat color in thin, controlled layers directly into the scratch. Avoid overfilling the scratch; the goal is to build the paint up slowly to the level of the surrounding finish.
Each layer of base coat must dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once the color is built up, apply a layer of clear coat over the repair to seal and protect the base coat. After the clear coat cures for several days, the repaired area may be slightly raised, requiring light wet-sanding with very fine-grit sandpaper (2000 to 3000 grit) to level the repair flush with the original paint.
