Lubrication is necessary for maintaining the performance and extending the life of any clipper. Clipper blades operate by moving rapidly against each other, creating friction that generates heat and causes wear. Regular oiling introduces a thin, protective film between the cutting surfaces to manage this friction. This step ensures the blades move smoothly, preventing them from dulling prematurely or overheating.
Optimal Oiling Timing and Technique
The most effective approach is to oil your clippers both immediately before and immediately after each use cycle. Oiling prior to operation lubricates the blades, minimizing metal-on-metal contact. This prevents excessive friction, keeps the blade temperature down, and ensures the motor operates efficiently.
Applying oil after use is equally important for long-term preservation. This post-use application creates a barrier that seals the blades, protecting them from environmental moisture and preventing rust or corrosion during storage. It also helps flush out any microscopic debris remaining after cleaning.
To apply the oil correctly, first ensure the clipper is turned off and the blade is clean. Turn the clipper on and hold it with the blade teeth pointed downward to prevent oil from running into the motor housing. Apply two to three small drops of specialized clipper oil evenly across the top edge of the blade teeth.
Place one additional drop on each of the side rails where the moving blade slides against the bottom blade. Allow the clipper to run for five to ten seconds to distribute the oil across the contact surface. Turn the clipper off and use a clean cloth to wipe away any excess oil, leaving only a thin film on the blades.
Comprehensive Clipper Maintenance Schedule
Before lubrication, thoroughly clean the blades to remove all hair and debris. Use a small, stiff-bristled brush to remove trapped hair from the teeth and the area between the two blades. Oiling a dirty blade traps abrasive particles, accelerating wear and creating a sticky residue that hinders performance.
For optimal performance, the blades should be oiled every time they are used. If you are using your clippers for an extended period, re-oil the blades approximately every 10 to 15 minutes. This prevents the oil from dissipating and ensures the blades remain consistently cool and smooth.
Always use specialized clipper oil, which is typically a light, high-viscosity mineral oil formulated for high speeds and temperatures. Avoid substitutes like cooking oils, as these can turn rancid, gum up the mechanism, and attract dirt. General-purpose products like WD-40 should not be used; they are primarily solvents, not long-lasting lubricants, and can degrade the plastic components of the clipper.
