What Food Is Toxic to Squirrels?

Many people enjoy observing squirrels and may feel inclined to offer them food. While these animals appear resilient, certain human foods can be harmful or even fatal. Providing inappropriate food, even with good intentions, can lead to serious health complications.

Specifically Poisonous Foods

Some common human foods contain compounds toxic to squirrels, even in small quantities. Avocado, for instance, contains persin, a toxin found in its leaves, fruit, stems, and seeds. This substance can cause severe illness or death, with leaves generally being the most toxic part.

Chocolate and caffeinated products present another significant danger due to the presence of methylxanthines, specifically theobromine and caffeine. Squirrels cannot metabolize these compounds effectively, leading to symptoms such as tremors, elevated heart rate, seizures, and gastrointestinal upset. Dark chocolate contains higher concentrations of theobromine, making it particularly dangerous, and even small amounts can be fatal. Artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, are also highly toxic to squirrels. Ingesting xylitol can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar, leading to weakness, liver dysfunction, seizures, and potentially coma.

Fruit pits and seeds from apples, cherries, peaches, and plums contain amygdalin, a compound that converts into hydrogen cyanide when crushed or chewed and exposed to digestive enzymes. While a few seeds might not be immediately lethal to larger animals, the smaller body mass of a squirrel makes them more susceptible to cyanide poisoning. Onions and garlic also pose a threat, as they contain compounds that can damage a squirrel’s red blood cells, resulting in anemia and digestive distress. Repeated exposure to these ingredients can prove fatal over time.

Foods That Cause Health Problems

Beyond acutely poisonous items, many common human foods, while not immediately fatal, contribute to significant long-term health issues for squirrels. Processed human foods, including bread, crackers, chips, and sugary snacks, lack essential nutrients and are high in sugar, salt, and artificial ingredients. Consuming these items can lead to dental problems, obesity, digestive upset, and can alter their natural foraging behaviors, making them dependent on human handouts.

Excessive corn consumption is problematic due to its poor calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. This imbalance can lead to Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD), where the squirrel’s body extracts calcium from its bones, resulting in weakened bones. Corn, like peanuts, can also harbor toxic molds, such as aflatoxins, which damage the liver. Peanuts, often offered to squirrels, are not nutritionally dense and can also contain aflatoxins, harming the liver and immune system. Their high fat content and imbalanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio contribute to metabolic problems and MBD if consumed in large quantities.

Dairy products are another unsuitable food choice for squirrels. Like many mammals, squirrels are lactose intolerant, lacking the enzymes to digest lactose, which leads to stomach discomfort and digestive upset. Even sunflower seeds, if given excessively, can disrupt a squirrel’s nutritional balance due to their fat content and less-than-ideal calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. These dietary issues collectively compromise a squirrel’s overall health, affecting bone strength, coat quality, and metabolic function.

Responsible Feeding Practices

The most effective way to ensure a squirrel’s health is to allow them to rely on their natural diet. If feeding wild squirrels is desired, do so sparingly and with appropriate food items. Offer only natural, unsalted, and unsweetened nuts or seeds in moderation. Good choices include unsalted almonds, walnuts, pecans, and hickory nuts, ideally still in their shells to provide natural gnawing opportunities important for dental health.

Providing a consistent source of fresh water is equally important, especially during dry periods. It is also important to avoid over-feeding, as this can lead to dependence on human handouts, increased aggression among squirrels, and potential overpopulation in local areas. Cleaning any feeding stations regularly helps prevent the spread of diseases. Ultimately, observing squirrels from a distance and appreciating their natural behaviors is the safest approach for both the animals and human interactions.
