The timing belt links the rotation of the crankshaft to the camshaft. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons, which move up and down within the cylinders to create power. The camshaft controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves, allowing the air-fuel mixture in and the exhaust gases out.

This synchronization, known as engine timing, is necessary for the four-stroke combustion cycle to occur efficiently. The belt is a loop of durable, reinforced rubber, often made of materials like HNBR or Neoprene, with precisely molded teeth on its inner surface. These teeth mesh with corresponding grooves on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys, preventing slippage that would throw the engine’s timing off.

A timing belt is distinct from a timing chain, which performs the identical function but is constructed from metal links, similar to a bicycle chain. Belts are generally quieter and less expensive to manufacture, but they are considered a wear item because the rubber degrades over time and requires scheduled replacement. Chains, while more durable and often designed to last the life of the engine, are typically noisier and housed inside the engine block.
