The crankcase is the structural housing for the internal combustion engine, serving as the primary housing for the mechanism that converts combustion power into rotational motion. It is the enclosed chamber that surrounds the crankshaft, connecting rods, and other moving parts related to the engine’s lower assembly. This structure provides mechanical support for the internal components while also forming a sealed environment for the lubrication system. The Engine Block and the Crankcase
The crankcase is typically integrated into the main body of the engine, known as the engine block. In modern four-stroke designs, the crankcase forms the lower section of this block casting, positioned directly beneath the cylinders where the pistons operate. The upper portion of the engine block contains the cylinders and cooling passages. The lower portion is the crankcase, which houses the crankshaft’s main bearings. This structure acts as the core framework, supporting the crankshaft on bearing journals and providing a mounting platform for engine accessories.
Identifying the Crankcase’s Lower Section
For a person trying to locate the crankcase from outside the vehicle, the most accessible part is the lower section, commonly known as the oil pan or sump. This component is a separate metal container, usually made of stamped steel or cast aluminum, that bolts directly to the bottom flange of the main engine block casting. The oil pan seals the lower opening of the crankcase, completing the enclosed chamber. To find this element, look underneath the vehicle, generally located between the front axle assembly and the transmission bell housing. It is a large, relatively flat, bolted container that is the lowest-hanging part of the engine assembly and contains a threaded drain plug.
Primary Role of the Crankcase
The primary function of the crankcase centers on two roles: structural support and lubrication management. Structurally, the crankcase provides the necessary rigid enclosure and mounting points to support the crankshaft, which converts the pistons’ vertical motion into rotational energy. The precise alignment and heavy-duty bearing journals within the crankcase ensure the crankshaft can rotate smoothly under high load and speed.
In terms of lubrication, the crankcase assembly serves as the reservoir for the engine’s oil supply in a wet sump system. The oil is stored in this sump, from where it is pumped to lubricate all internal moving parts, before draining back down into the crankcase by gravity. The sealed nature of the crankcase is also important for containing the oil and protecting the sensitive internal components from external contaminants like dirt, moisture, and debris.
