The punter, conversely, is a player whose function is largely defensive, aiming to maximize field position when the offense has failed to gain a first down. A punt typically occurs on fourth down when the team is too far for a field goal attempt and chooses to surrender possession. The punter’s objective is to launch the ball with maximum distance and height, forcing the opponent to start their drive as close to their own end zone as possible. This strategic difference means the kicker focuses on accuracy and raw distance toward a target, while the punter focuses on trajectory control and time in the air.
Divergent Kicking Techniques
The difference between the two positions lies in the mechanics of how the ball is struck, which is dictated by the ball’s starting position. The kicker executes a place kick, where the ball is held stationary on the ground by a teammate or placed on a tee for a kickoff. This technique is complex, as the punter must manage the drop angle and contact point to create a tight spiral and maximize “hang time,” the duration the ball remains airborne. High hang time allows the coverage team to run downfield and prevent a long return. Training focuses on maintaining a consistent drop height and angle, which is the most variable part of the punt. Punters often have a leaner build that aids in the long, fluid follow-through required for hang time. Their practice sessions are dedicated to the muscle memory of the drop-to-kick sequence, a skill set that does not translate to the stationary place kick.
